I was dying to see this exhibit. Before I even decided if I was willing to spend my euros for Monumenta, a certain someone must have heard my thoughts and posted an ad in Freecycle that she's giving away a pass for the exhibit.

I went twice. The first try, I came almost closing time so it was too late to view the inside of the installation. I decided to come back the next day which was also the last day. I had to endure long queues for hours twice- the first line to enter Grand Palais, the other to see the interior of the installation.

It was extraordinary. One of the best exhibits I've seen in my life. Absolute goosebumps. As it was the last day there was a concert and poetry reading happening inside. It was a touching scene, as if I was in another dimension. For few minutes, I lost my sense of time and orientation.

The long queues were worth it.

I took advantage of the event not only to visit the museum for the first time, but also to see Ralph Lauren's automobile collection.

Verdict: 1)The cars are sinfully beautiful! I seriously drooled. 2)Les Arts Decoratifs is officially one of my favorite museums.

To die from thirst in Paris would never be a good excuse because those green fountains with four lovely female statues found all over the city were not built for ornamental reasons. They exist to quench thirst.

There are 108 so-called Fontaines Wallace with potable water trickling down from their domed tops. They were named after the philanthropist who donated the first fifty drinking fountains to Paris in 1872.

The first ever haircut I had in France was free. I was a bum then, still very much an expert in converting peso to euro and euro to peso, like it was some kind of natural mind exercise. The friend of my ex-landlady who's a hairstylist offered to cut my hair for free, provided he would have a free-hand on cutting my hair. He told me that most of his girl clients prefer long hair and he kinda missed turning hair to short lengths and experimenting on edgy looks.

Naturally, I didn't have a problem with that. I volunteered my head freely, with all my heart and soul, not caring at all if he would murder it. In the Philippines, I often permit strangers to experiment on my hair. Most of them were students who need guinea pigs to chop or color hair. Mind you, I don't have the best hair or a beautifully-sculpted head, but I have the kindest heart to those who are in need...

...of hair.

In Paris, there are also several beauty schools who are in dire need of guinea pigs. Some of them offer cuts for free or a contribution of 5 or 10 euros. Not bad considering most haircuts for women are priced at 35 euros on the average.

Social Security for the Freelancers

Tough life for a freelancer. It's a road less traveled thus, there's a lack of enough information on the processes, legalities and benefits on being one.

Groping my way into the French bureaucracy, I bounced like a ping pong ball until I hit bull's eye. It took me a long time though. All I wanted was a Securite Sociale number, but every time I applied for one, I would be rejected because I didn't have fiche du paie in my hands. Just invoices of my "services". It was a case nobody was able to help solve until I went to the doctor to get a prescription. She found it odd that I was already a year in France and I still didn't have my social security. So she scheduled me a meeting with a social worker who became the key to my chicken or egg dilemma. According to the social worker, I should go straight to RSI (Regime Social Independants) since I am not a salaried employee.

So I headed to RSI with high hopes of finally owning those magic security numbers. To my disappointment (I almost cried), I once again hit another wall. The receptionist was looking for my freelance registration papers, which of course I didn't have at that time because I didn't know how/where/when to do it. For more than a year, I was living in ignorance. Apparently you have to first register before you start doing your activities as a freelance or entrepreneur.

With a little bit of research, I discovered Auto-Entrepreneur and the processes on how to become one. Arrows pointed me to Chambre de Commerce and so I went. Another wall. But fortunately it was the last wall before I was officially registered in my profession. Under the nature of my activities, I rightly belong under the umbrella of Chambre de Metiers et de l'Artisanat de Paris. I could actually register online as an Auto-Entrepreneur, but I prefer human contact as I had lots of questions.

To register as an Auto-Entrepreneur, you can either fill up the registration forms in the AE website or in person at the relevant Centre de Formalities de Enterprises, along with a copy of your carte de sejour. Few days after, you will receive a recepisse of your registration. Afterwards, a mail from INSEE with your SIREN and SIRET, as well as mail from Ministere du Budget des Comptes Publics de la Fonction Publique et de la Reforme de L'etat.

With these 3 mails filling up my letterbox, my days as a bubble were over and so I braved RSI once again and applied for my securite sociale.

To register in RSI you'd need the following:

For one night and for the first time in my life, I played the role of a model...in Paris! Complete with make-up by YSL make-up artists, hair done by stylists of L'Oreal and brief training from catwalk instructors, I walked the red carpet rolled over the streets of Boulevard Hausmann. Thanks to Galeries Lafayette.

The major retailer in the city invited fashionistas from Paris, thru a screening in the web, to experience the model life and walk down the 2-km runway.

C'est cool. But in any given day, I still prefer the designer life. The event, however, gave me a sneak peak of the technicalities of a typical Parisian fashion show . It was like a backstage pass, but with freebies and all.

And let me just emphasize how amazed I am at how organized the event was. Staff were everywhere to accommodate the participants. We were treated like real models and not just ordinary people plucked out from the streets. Logistics was absolutely superb. They even anticipated the rain. When drops started to fall, uber chic transparent umbrellas instantly came to the rescue to save fashion from the menace of the rainy day.

Paris, Why I Love Thee

After a punch in the face by a crazy stranger, a chicken pox ordeal plus a very painful and emotional healing crisis, I still have a complete set of teeth, my sanity intact and the same love for La Ville-Lumiere. A thousand needles pricked my bubble and reality kicked me really hard in my bony ass, but nothing's changed: Paris, je t'aime. Here are the reasons why...

-For some odd reason, I feel welcome here. And no, I don't have many Parisian friends (in fact, I spend most of my time in solitude) and I am still having a difficult time stepping inside the circle of the industry where I want to be. But that doesn't deter me from having this feeling of acceptance that I haven't felt in my home country or Dubai.

-All my life, people repeatedly remind me and emphasize the fact that I am small. Some manager in a bank in Dubai even had this crazy opinion that I won't be able to get a job, just because I am small and skinny (what the?! I am not applying for a construction worker position!!!). Right here, right now I am still small; but I just don't feel...small.

-Almost everybody rides the metro. I love the fact that people wearing H&M clothes can ride and mix in one train with someone sporting a Chanel jacket or a Balenciaga motorcycle bag.

-I love (and hate) the metro. Navigo is there to further punctuate the feeling. The all-access train card is like a ticket to freedom and the key to the nooks and crannies of the fabled city.

-I drooled when I first entered the wonderful world of Louvre. More saliva escaped my lips as I visited more museums. But. I am more amazed by how the streets can be art galleries and art museums themselves.

-Lots of freebies: events, exhibits, magazines, movies, open air piano concerts, music music music, wifi at parks and libraries, haircuts, makeovers, wine tastings, Starbucks samplers, cocktails with overflowing champagne...

-So much to do, so little time. Winter, spring, summer or fall, Paris is alive and booming with all sorts of entertainment.

-I can be the best jologs here without worrying about tarnishing my good name. I can queue up for a bread sampler or free flavored water, or try a free 10-minute yoga in the streets and nobody would care (or do they?).

-I can just retreat to Jardin du Luxembourg or Jardin des Tuileries, sit down, breathe in fresh air and clear my thoughts whenever I feel like a deflated balloon.

-Lots of churches where I can kneel down and pray.

-Healthcare

-The French has the finest junks ever. I experience a violent adrenaline rush whenever I go to flea markets and vide-greniers. Everytime I wish that I have all the money in the world to buy all the beautiful used items being peddled by the French.

-Best fireworks (so far). I squeezed myself through the terrifying crowd in Champ de Mars in last year's Bastille Day celebration and witnessed the grandest fireworks I've seen in my life.

-I came here packed with ambition. Until one day, a wise man I've met under the Louvre told me, "Work doesn't define who you are". Thus I came to my senses, unclenched my fists and since then I began to give more appreciation to the more essential things in life.

-My country failed. Dubai failed. Only in Paris did I attempt to learn the thing that I hated most: cooking (as if I have a choice). Not only am I getting better at cooking but also beginning to be an expert in infiltrating open markets. And now ladies and gentlemen excusez-moi but... I am now falling in love with food.

-Baguette, coffee, chocolates, crepes, champagne, cheese...

-Cute policemen and firemen. Sigh.

The best months to raid shops and boutiques in Paris are January and July, as these two months are the soldes season in the city. But when you happen to be sleeping while these best shopping months are on-going, there's always the outlet stores to run to.

One of those that I recommend that's not very far from Paris is Marques Avenue. The average sized outlet store houses brands like Bensimon, Carven, Comptoir des Cotonniers, Cyrillus, IKKS, Guy Degrenne, Manfield, Quiksilver, Des Petits Hauts, etc.

Getting Sick in Paris

After more than a year, I was about to grab hold of my dream to hit the beach and soak in the sun. And when I finally did, the mischievous gods played a joke on me. I, the girl who rarely get sick, was suddenly hit with the catastrophe of adult CHICKEN POX at the onset of my Spain vacation! How fun was that. I was itchy the entire time and of course the summer heat made all my suffering worse.

The entire time that I was in Spain, the rashes and itching was a mystery case. I had to go to the only hospital of Tossa de Mar and pay 60 euros and 50 cents just so the doctor could apply steroid cream on my lower leg rash and warn me to stay away from trees, animals, sun and sand.

And so for the first time in my life, I found myself missing France. It's like missing home. I had a very strong urge to run to the airport and take the earliest flight back to Paris Beauvais airport.

Why? Because of its topnotch healthcare system. I don't know about other countries, but in France, it doesn't matter if you have or do not have money, with or without insurance, legal or illegal. The country won't leave you to die. If you're sick, you will be granted medical care. That, for me, is like one of the biggest welcoming gesture the country can offer.

As soon as I was home sweet home, I immediately set a rendez-vous with the health center near my house. Since I still didn't have my securite sociale during my chicken pox ordeal, the consultations with the dermatologist were free of charge. Even my medicines were free! As if those weren't enough, the doctor and pharmacists were just really nice to me. In fact, I sought comfort from them when I was feeling all alone with my disease.

This is where some of the clothes from the collection boxes of Le Relais end up. Ding Fring is one of the few thrift shops in France selling quality items recovered from generous individuals. The secondhand items vary from clothes to bags and even bed linens and curtains.

Frankly, I didn't find the goods as exciting as those of other thrift shops. The good part is that everything is clean as they were washed and pressed prior to selling. Plus I was able to spot a Ted Lapidus leather handbag for a mere 6 euros!

All proceeds go to Emmaus charity.

To the bargain hunters, SYMPA is a true destination. Located in the north, it is where one can buy surplus finds from big brands such as Naf Naf, Best Mountain, Petit Bateau, Zara, Diesel, Etam, Mexx, Carling, etc.

Occasionally, SYMPA would drop the already very low price to a much lesser value. If you're lucky, you can discover gem finds for as low as 1 euro.

I remember being very nervous the moment my feet touched the French ground for the first time. It was only natural. I was facing the unknown with not enough weapons packed in my suitcase. I was so eager to finally see the Eiffel tower in person that it didn't really matter if I knew no one, had only 1500 euros as pocket money and not entirely sure if I could find a job that I wanted. To top it all, I left my country equipped with a mere 24-hour extensive knowledge of French! It was actually less since I enrolled late in Alliance Francaise de Manille.

Yes, more than anything, the very cause of the butterflies in my stomach was the language factor. An everyday normal activity was already a challenge. I had to memorize lines just to buy necessities from the supermarket. And every time they throw back a French response that I couldn't understand, I could only reveal a stupid blank look. I was also paranoid that if I get lost I won't be able to get home because nobody would be able to understand me. In filing documents I always had to disturb a learned person to translate for me.

This must be what it feels like to be what the world has labelled as "stupid". You have so much to say and yet, you can't express it and can only say nothing. You would try with gestures and facial expressions but they won't suffice.

As the butterflies started to fly one by one, I discovered that, contrary to the universal notion, the French actually understand and speak English, especially the younger generation. But they appreciate it and and respect you more if you try to speak their language. Sometimes in my effort to speak the language, I end up sounding so awful and slow that they'd ask me to speak English instead.

More than a year after, I am still the same stupid chinky-eyed foreigner. From time to time, I would be acquainted with a French and I would be criticized for my inability to speak their language. I made so little progress, because maybe, there's just little effort in my part. I am losing my English, and even my Tagalog, but not gaining much French. One time, I went to the doctor to get a prescription. I was in panic, because however I try to search it in my brain, I couldn't remember the word "prescription". The funny thing is, I could remember, crystal-clear, its French meaning.

I am actually taking French classes. It's a two-hour twice-a-week classes in Foyer de Grenelle. The night school is run by French volunteers, so the students only have to pay 40 euros for the entire school year(books and handouts included).

For those who have a lower budget, Red Cross is offering twice-a-week classes that only cost 15 euros/school year. There are, in fact, a lot of organizations offering affordable classes:

Most of these organizations are offering twice-a-week classes. Frankly, two hours is not enough. So to supplement these classes, a language exchange might be a good idea. But I've been told many times that the best way to learn French is 1. to find a French boyfriend(or girlfriend) 2. watch French films with subtitles regularly.

If you find these suggestions way too complicated and you have the money to spend, then try the very popular La Sorbonne, Alliance Francaise, or Universite Paris Descartes. They offer everyday classes and supplementary learning activities.

There is also a site which lists down the recommended F.L.E. centers in France. In addition to the centers, you can also find information on the different exams that certifies your grasp of the language (DILF, DELF, DALF).

Competences et Talents Visa Add-ons (Philippines)

Unfortunately, the Competences et Talents visa is not free anymore. Once your application is approved, you need 99 euros to make it fully yours. Aside from that, you need to submit another set of requirements before the embassy sticks the visa into your passport.

Sourced from a friend who was recently awarded the Competences et Talents visa, here's the list of additional requirements:

-copy of health insurance (from accredited companies)

-proof of means of support (bank statements, guarantor)

-flight details

-proof of accommodation in France (Attestation d'Accueil from your host/hotel reservation)

You are only given three months to produce the requirements and use up the visa. If not, you're back to zero and would have to re-apply.

I have this sickness in which I always have the urge to give away my clothes. It helps me uncling to my past and brings in room for the new.

And so it was near heaven when I discovered Le Relais.

Le Relais has several collection boxes in strategic areas for people who want to give away their unwanted clothes, shoes and bags. Quite convenient for those who find Freecycle too complicated and too time-consuming, or for those who are just plain allergic to human interaction.

Once collected, the donated items are then segregated into several categories. A small percentage stays in France and are sold in thrift shops, some are exported and experience new life in other countries, while the rest go to a recycling center.

To top it all, with your old clothes, you help in the creation of more jobs in France, and perhaps in other countries too.

When I officially moved in to my humble home, my excitement died down as I was hit with the hard reality that I had no furniture, no appliances. 9m2 seemed very spacious then. I could even fit in 10 heads to give justice to "9m2". Worse, my heater wasn't working so I had to think of creative ways to warm myself up as I waited for the plombier.

Fortunately I had the Ikea single mattress given by my friend Sol and the comforter from Timi. Sufficiently enough to be a notch higher than the homeless sleeping in the metro.

As the days grew colder, the essential stuff started piling in, thanks to a lot of generous Pinoys. From zero, I started having a small drawer, table, chair, extra warm duvet, a pillow, utensils, etc...

It was great. But it just got better when I discovered Freecycle. I already knew the site, but I didn't know how good it was until my Parisian independence.

In Freecyle, you'll find not just freebies, but amazingly good freebies! In about a months time of being a member, I've seen people giving away television, computers, printers, cameras, ovens, fridge, toasters, bikes, clothes, microwave, tables, chairs, cabinets, baby stuff, lamps, plants, beds, mattresses, doors, windows, tickets, etc. Some new, some old, some broken, some weird.

I, for one, am a recipient of pretty neat and useful stuff from several generous souls. It took my worries off spending. And so week by week I cross out items from my checklist. I was able to get a halogen lamp, throw pillows, microwave, vegetable steamer, hangers, books, wine crates and even a Longchamp back pack. There was even a small fridge, but I lost it to another because the transport guy whom I hired, was suddenly scheduled for a job interview at 7 in the evening.

Freecycle is a combination of flea market and ebay. Except that the items are 100% FREE. As Paris is notorious for its space-challenged dwellings, Freecycle becomes an avenue for people to get rid of stuff that they don't want or need anymore. It is for the non-business-minded people who find more convenience in giving away their stuff rather than undergoing through the stress of selling. Mostly it is for people who believes in recycling. Rather than throwing things out, members wait for someone who will benefit from their "trash". Good for the environment, eh?

Around 85% of things that fill up my sanctuary are treasures from different people and I am not a bit ashamed to admit it. I think practicing freecycling is just practical for expats like me for they do not know how long they will stay in this fairytale land. With a little bit of imagination, the bits and pieces acquired from Freecycle might turn into something truly magical.

Freecycle is not just a hunting ground for freebie addicts. It is, for me, like a club where people share their stuff, as well as their desire for a sustainable world. It's also a good way to meet people from everywhere. From the short span of time that I've been a giver and taker, I've met and chatted with French, Romanian, American, Chinese, British...It also gave me an excuse to rediscover Paris, widen my French vocabulary, and once again thank God for my good fate.

Change of Address

As if relocating is not stressful enough, I had to return to the Prefecture de Police to inform the beloved authorities that I've changed my address. Obligatoire. One of those adult things that I wish my mother would do for me. But as I am in France (and my mother isn't), I had to muster enough strength to wake up early and face the unknown. This time without a translator with me.

I actually made a mistake the first time. I was told that I only had to go to the Commissariat in my district to change my address. But as my Carte de Sejour is addressed in Hauts-de-Seine and not in Paris, I was instructed to go to the Prefecture de Police instead. You only go the Commissariat if it's a Paris-to-Paris change of address.

Usually one must dial any of these numbers first to set a rendez-vous: 0153212550/0153715371/0153735373

You also have the option to make a rendez-vous online:

But in my case, I was instructed to head straight to Bureau 1708 (escalier F, 1st floor), without setting an appointment (note: this Bureau entertains concerns from 9am-12noon only).

For the recipients of Competences et Talents visa, these are the necessary requirements for the changement d'adresse:

-copy of your Carte de Sejour

-3 ID photos

-copy of your Controle Medicale

-proof of your new address in your name (contract, quittance de loyer, Assurance d'habitation)

For Three Months I Had A Good View of Sacre-Coeur

I've been warned.

Even before I dipped my toes into the Parisian dream I've already been hearing scraps of Parisian housing horror stories. Oh no, there are no ghosts nor ghoulish characters lurking under the beds. But worse...More vicious, more adult.

To gain access to dwellings for rent under your name, one must procure the necessary requirements and submit them to an agency, under its approval. And that means...

-Carte de Sejour

-payslips

-Guarantor

-agency fee (around 200-300 euros)

-one-two month/s deposit

-RIB

Obviously I didn't have those when I was new. But through the help of a friend I succeeded in starting out my baby steps. In my first six months, I lived with a very warm and accommodating Filipino family in Boulogne-Billancourt. I payed 260 euros per month, and that includes everything including food and laundry. I didn't have my own bed though. I had to sleep beside a 12-year-old girl in a queen-sized bed. But for 260 for everything plus a warm treatment, who was I to complain?

At six months I developed enough guts to leave my hospitable hosts. I still didn't have enough money then but I had a friend who was equally courageous as I was in braving a new world. She found an ad in Craigslist by a French student. He's offering to sublet his studio in rue Letort for 2 months as he was leaving for vacation. It was located in the North though. Back then we were afraid of the notorious North because of all the bad publicities we've been hearing.

But the price lured us to change our perspective. At 350 euros/month for everything, it was absolutely perfect for our pockets! Day by day we were starting to get accustomed to the profanities in the wall, the Turkish toilet and flight of never-ending stairs(there was no lift in the building).

It was starting to become a sanctuary...Maybe because we had an absolutely magnificent view of Sacre-Coeur. I've never really fully appreciated the exterior of the Basilica until I lived in that "Golden Palace"

September was about to end and my friend and I had to part ways. In my search for a new home, Appartager.com and Craigslist became my everyday buddies. Craigslist offered more scams than real deals. Oddly enough, I almost bagged a free room in a posh home in exchange of "babysitting" a 12-year-old girl.

I ended up in a 250-euro-per-month colocation in rue Sofia with an Algerian roommate. I found his ad in Leboncoin.fr. This time I had a closer view of Sacre-Coeur. However at the end of that month, I decided I needed to leave.

Once again my friend came to my aid and for two months I lived with another accommodating Filipino family in Gabriel-Peri.

Big bang to 2010, by some miracle (and with the help of good people) I now have my own place. I don't know how it happened because honestly until now I'm still way below minimum wage. It's a 9m2 room though and the toilet and bath are shared with others. But it's under my name and I have peace and quiet. Best of all, it's at the foot of Sacre-Coeur.

Fête Nationale turned out to be one of my really favorite events so far. Prelude to July 14, concerts are held right in the middle of Bastille.

And right before Bastille day ended, the entry points toward Eiffel tower are suddenly jampacked with tourists, immigrants and locals as they wait for the grand fireworks display happening at 22h45. I was a bit surprised to have seen that much people and it kinda annoyed me as well. All of the inhabitants of Paris might have been standing or sitting down in that area that fine day. People were squeezing in to get the best spot to view the fireworks, while a few were shouting at policemen for barricading all the strategic points.

But it was all worth it. Although I wasn't in the best spot and while there are trees covering half of my view of the Eiffel tower, I could say that it was the best fireworks display I've seen in my life so far--one of those few reminders that I'm blessed to be here in France.

Inspired by the archives of Stockman's , the fashion expert dabbles with techniques to highlight products using shoe racks, hat stands, hand displays, scarf and tie rings.

Palais de Tokyo opens its doors to the public for a guided visit of the Spy Numbers exhibit, as well as the Walking Series performance by Vanessa Le Mat.

Athough I didn't buy anything, the vide-grenier in rue Raymond Losserand truly made my Sunday. Vide-greniers are second-hand sales(or garage sales) conducted in an area where residents could sell away their unwanted stuff to bring in some space for the new. All sorts of things are sold in a very cheap price. I even chanced upon a Jack Russell being sold for a mere 15 euros!

Gustave Eiffel: Le Magicien du Fer

Paris pays tribute to the man behind the Eiffel Tower. The makings of the "La Tour de 300 metres", from the drawing plans to the pictures of the construction of the infamous structure are displayed in the first major exhibition dedicated to the iron genius.

Timi, Sol and I were killing time and feet in Rue de la Verrerie when a bunch of gay French greeted us. Although apprehensive, we greeted back. And so began the quick chatting in the street. It was Terence who did most of the talking as he was the only one comfortable in conversing in English among his friends. For that very quick encounter, Terence related his occupation, his Filipino ex-boyfriend (complete with pictures from his wrecked i-Phone), and how he found us "cute".

And because he was so amused by our Asian looks, or maybe because his clear judgment is so clouded with alcohol, he bought and gave each one of us a red rose from a vendor.

It was my first time to receive a rose--in Paris and by a gay guy. But I'm so so glad it came from Terence.

The French Are Nice

Contrary to how the world sees them, the French are not rude or snobbish. At least that's how I see them. Or maybe I'm just too numb or that I refuse to see the rough side of the coin. Or as Timi's boyfriend pointed out, maybe because I'm a girl and men tend to be nicer with women. But really, I've been staying here for 3 months but I haven't really encountered an in-your-face rude French. Oh well, there's one...when I went out with Timi and her boyfriend to this bar, a waitress(I'm not even sure if she's French) rudely threw the menu list into our table. A shock? No. I've seen worse in other parts of the world.

When I was new here and my friend Anne and I went out for Marais for the first time, this guy next to us offered to take picture of us, without us even asking to. Occasionally, there are people offering to show directions when we seem lost. There are also those who ask directions even though I look as though I don't speak French or English at all.

They're also quite forgiving when it comes to my broken French. Some even make an effort to speak English. During my flea market trip up north, the merchants were entertaining my questions and some even commended the little French that I know. So far, I was well received in hotels on the 5th and 6th arrondissements during my flyer distribution quest . Surprisingly, the receptionists were able to understand the crappy French that I was saying.

Yes, the world has seen the rude and the snobbish French. But I'm sure it has also seen the good French-the French who say "Bonjour" everyday that you see them, the French who bump you but say "Pardon", or the French who invite you for dinner. The thing is, we expect too much from the French and we tend to overanalyze them. Although they own the Eiffel tower and many of the most beautiful structures in the world, let's not forget that they are people too. Just as in any race, the French consist of different people with different stories behind them. Is it not enough that they have opened their door to immigrants like me. So what if they don't smile at strangers. I don't even smile at strangers in my home country. I've also realized that it's quite difficult to smile during cold seasons. Besides, I find it really scary if a stranger smiles at me for no apparent reason.

Les Salons

PRÊT À PORTER PARIS® should have been the first trade show I would have attended in Paris. But the date of the event coincided with my job interview and French classes. But that's just an excuse. In truth, I didn't want to let go of my 30 euros for the entrance.

Then came Mess Around-another cool display of fashion paraphernalia. It was free but i got lost looking for Docks de Paris Porte de la Chapelle. When I finally found it, I was already seeing logistics teams packing up the goods.

Oh well...

While initially it was a series of comical unfortunate events, I was finally able to see glimpses of les salons in Paris, albeit of the more alternative nature.

Tmode Le Salon des Créateurs de Mode was held last March 20-22 in Espace d'Animation des Blancs-Manteaux. It was an event held for 90 créateurs of clothes and fashion accessories. It kinda reminded me of Manila's bazaars, but in a more specific level. Entree Libre

Cocktail Creatif was held in a smaller venue in 70 Rue Jean Pierre Timbaud. It was a showcase and sale of goods from six créateurs. ENTRÉE-LIBRE as well.

Le Salon du Vintage was obviously for the vintage lovers. Held April 4-5, it was a meeting place of vintage collectors and enthusiasts. Two floors of 81 rue des Archives were filled with rare vintage pieces from names such as Chanel, Pierre Cardin, Hermes, etc. Cool place, cool music, cool people. It is definitely an event for the spring-break tourists. But since I am not a tourist, a 5 euro-entrance fee wasn't worth it. It paled in comparison to the gem finds in the North flea markets and the Tripp shops around Paris.

Opening A Bank Account

Opening a bank account is one of the greatest achievements I've ever done in France. Of course, it wasn't an easy feat. My first attempt in HSBC was a failure. I was being required an Employment Contract of which I can not produce since I am a freelancer.

Societe Generale proved to be more accommodating than the popular international bank. Without a translator to help me, I tried to utter French words that sounded like "I would like to open a bank account..." I knew I sounded stupid, but next thing I know, I was being entertained by Mr. Regis, my conseiller. After a few blank looks, we agreed on an appointment (rendez-vous in French) for next day.

To open a bank account, these are the following requirements:
-passport copy
-Carte de Sejour
-latest EDF copy (some banks require EDF of 3 months)
-Attestation (if the EDF isn't under your name)
-landlord's ID (if the EDF isn't under your name)
-initial deposit

I was so ready to face the infamous French cold treatment but apparently, I didn't get one. Mr. Regis even exerted to speak English just so the alien me can open a bank account. I didn't even have the Recepisse of my Carte de Sejour yet, but he allowed me to have a new account.

TIP: Don't know what to say when expressing your wish to open a bank account? My French book suggests that you say, "Bonjour, je voudrais ouvrir un compte dans votre banque."

Prefecture

After your arrival in France and whenever your cells are ready, you must run to your nearest Prefecture, together with these requirements:

+a copy of your Birth Certificate (translated in French)
+proof of residency (a copy of EDF, Attestation from your landlord, a copy of your landlord's ID)
+4 passport size pictures
+a copy of your Tourist Visa and stamp of arrival
+a copy of your Lettre de delivrance de la Carte Competences et Talents par l'Ambassade de France aux Philippines
+self-addressed white envelope with stamp

I also recommend that you tag along a translator if you're not yet confident with your crude French. You might encounter a nasty officer, so be ready. It's better if you queue in early, especially in Paris, as there are also many immigrants like you who are working their way into the legal circle.

You've given all the right requirements if after a few minutes, the officer hands over your Recepisse De Demande De Carte de Sejour.

TIP: The translation of documents can be quite expensive. Through the recommendation of some acquaintances, I was able to find a translator who's charging only 24 euros per page:

Philippine Immigration

Here I am, giving tips and all, but did you know that I almost did not make it through the Philippine immigration. I was denied twice. The immigration officers were asking for a return ticket and a POEA clearance, which was illogical because I'm holding a special kind of visa. I kept on to my argument but ended up losing over and over. I kinda felt like a pingpong ball that time.

It was a good thing I had the number of the French Embassy. I was also fortunate that someone's at the office even though it was a holiday. After explaining my dilemma, I was told to return to the immigration queue and get the names of the officer/s and the contact number.

Mustering enough strength and spirit, I went straight to the immigration supervisor. Instead of getting her name and office number, I ended up going through a bloody interrogation. Good thing I knew by heart what the French and Talent Competence Visa is all about. As I was explaining, I realized that I was caught in a tug-of-war of power between the French Embassy and Philippine immigration. And since I was at the Philippine immigration territory, I had to show them that they are the kings and queens and nobody else. Apparently, it worked. After another series of questions from the POEA supervisor, they finally decided to stamp my visa and let me go.

Although it was a hellish experience, oddly enough, the Philippine immigration earned my respect. Hearing so many stories about immigration money extortion, I was so ready to hand out cash just so I can make it to my flight. But they didn't extort a single centavo from me. At least in my eyes, I still think they are a bunch of respectable people. They still have my respect.

That incident also proved that there are still things that can be fixed minus money and connections. In the absence of money and connections, faith exists.

Buying Euros

Since euro is still a minority in the money exchange business in the Philippines, buying euros is slightly an inconvenient experience. It is not as easy as exchanging those dollars. Since dollar is a universal language, transactions can be done in practically every mall you see. But not euro. The currency is so rare that if you do come across a bank or a center that sells it, you'd have to call first to make a reservation prior to the exchange. You need to state how much and when you intend to pick up the money.

Based on online recommendations, Edzen seems to be one of the best money changers in Manila. It is quite obvious that it has a large stock of euros as publicized by the Euro general scandal. Edzen Money Changer is located in Mabini Street, between Pedro Gil and Salas Street. If you don't like Edzen, there are other exchange centers looming around the place.

The problem with Manila though is that it is a very unsafe place to carry around money. Since I didn't want to die of paranoia I decided to buy my euros in BPI Forex 6750 Branch. It is the best option for me since I have a BPI account. Instead of carrying around cash, I only had to fill out a withdrawal slip and hand it over to the teller. After few minutes of waiting,...voila! The pesos are now in euros.

At the time of my transaction, BPI rate was 1 EUR= Php 64.0827.

Aside from BPI Forex, I also recommend iFX Foreign Exchange Center. It is located in the lower ground of Goldcrest in Glorietta.

Penny Pincher Flight

My original plan was to fly to Paris on January, so that I could at least spend Christmas and New Year here in the Philippines. I also thought that I'll be able to grab a cheap deal if I target that month. However, in my research, I found out that I'll get a better deal if I leave on December. Ticket prices would have doubled by 2009. That's a shock for a cheapskate like me. I opted for an after Christmas flight and picked out Gulf Air. I'm not really much of a fan of Gulf Air, but with my budget, it's the best that I've got.

I've discovered that tickets are usually cheaper if you buy them from travel agencies than if you buy them directly from the airline companies. Of course that's not always true so it's best that you compare prices first before handing out your cash. It's also a whole different story if you're booking online. There are sites like Asiatravel.com, Expedia, Travelocity, Sidestep that let you compare prices and book online. Prices to beat are usually from Gulf Air, Kuwait Airways, Etihad Airways and Malaysia Airlines. I bought my ticket in Pan Pacific Travel, upon the recommendation of a friend. If you happen to be in Makati, it's an agency worth trying.

French Competence and Talent Visa

Before I handed out my resignation letter to my Syrian boss in UAE, I knew I wanted Europe to be my next stop. I just didn't know how. But in my ignorance, the conspiracy of the universe took over. One day, a friend called me up to share about the French Competence and Talent Visa.

Also known as the Skills and Talent permit, the visa allows highly skilled foreign nationals to carry out professional activity of their choice in France for a period of 3 years (renewable to six). It is a new type of visa added by the French authorities to promote economic development of both France and the grantee's country. In the Philippines, only 100 slots are available for this year.

Who's eligible
France is eyeing out holders of Doctorate or Master's degree who already had work experience. Sounds heavy? I felt your pain in reading those words. I already had an overseas work experience but I don't hold any highfalutin titles. But they must have smelled my hunger and thirst. Sometimes, hunger and thirst are equally important as that of credentials. So if you think you can contribute to the development of France and Philippines, and is brave enough to learn the French language, then I think it's high time that you apply.

Requirements
Applying is very easy. All you have to do is submit to the French consulate a letter stating your career plans, along with other requirements. Don't be shocked when you the see the long stay visa application form. As it is written in French, you have to find someone to translate it for you or seek a good free online translator such as Systran. Remember to hand out two sets of the requirements plus six passport size pictures with white background. Although not required, it is best that you wear a business attire or smart casual attire even if you're just submitting your documents. Although they don't say it, first impression does count. And oh, don't forget that the embassy closes at 12noon. When my friend and I submitted our requirements, we came an hour too late so we had to go back the next day.

Parlez-vous Francais?
You don't need to speak, write and read French to be able to qualify. But I recommend that you state your intention to learn the language. Logic tells you that you should really be serious on your aim to learn the language if you don't want your French dream to turn into a nightmare.

Perks
1. The visa is F-R-E-E.
2. If you're married and have kids, you can take them along with you. Your family will be granted a Private and Family Life permit, which will enable your family members to live there. Your spouse is also entitled to work in France.
3. As a visa-holder, you are protected by French Laws. You are entitled to social and health insurance.
4. If Paris is your dream, this is seriously a dream come true.

Drawbacks
Sorry to say but work is not included. After the granting of the dream and the million-dollar feeling comes the hard part. After the consul hands you the visa, you're out on your own. That means looking for work, looking for a place to stay and all the other details vital to survival in a foreign land. Clearly, the visa is not for the faint-hearted. To be a dreamer is not enough. You have to be brave enough to battle through the obstacles that come with the package. And according to the consul, having connections is key in landing a job that you like in France. He was blatant in saying that he doesn't want us to end up washing dishes there.

Waiting Period
In China, it takes a month to know if you qualified or not. In the Philippines, it only takes about a week or two to know if you made it or not. How would you know? The embassy will call you, congratulate you and ask you to claim your visa.

The Evidence
A jeweler and a physical therapist were among the pioneer recipients of this kind of visa. My close friend who's a fashion designer/interior designer also qualified and is off to Paris on April. As I was researching in the net, I found two others who were given the visa. One of them is Timi. Timi is now in Paris working as a technical writer. She's one of the reasons why I created a blog. A generous soul who helped me a lot in plugging the dream into reality.

Pay It Forward

The gateway to Paris has finally been opened to me. I've never thought that my fairy godparents would grant me an access to its iron gates. Given so many factors, it used to be like a faraway dream. In fact, for a long time, even though the visa was already in my hands, it felt oh so surreal. It felt like winning a million-dollar lottery. It felt so much more.

And so, as gratitude to this beautiful thing that has happened to me, I've decided to create this blog as a guide to other hopefuls like me. I want to pay it forward.

Corny as it may sound, I can attest that miracles do happen and quantum physics is real. Mixed together, it explodes to something like...Paris for free.
